Behind The Lens Archives Coaching Philosophy Recruiting Chart your course juniors To all fans of the BTL, we have been busy with the final highlight video (Team Video for the 5A State Champions - Smyrna High School). For the record, I have a little over 75 hours in that video. I am glad that it is done. Something had to give and unfortunately for you, the reader of the BTL, that was it. OK, enough of the apologies, we have a lot to talk about, so let's jump right in with three topics. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coaching Philosophy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I listen to a ton of sports talk radio and was tuning recently when a host was discussing the philosophy of Pete Carroll. We all know that Pete Carroll is the current head football coach of University of Southern California. We all know that he has lost only 8 games in like the last 5 years. That he has had numerous athletes go on to the next level. We know that he has won and competed for the National Title. So, given all that, how do you get there? I mean how in the world do you, a football coach generate that kind of success? The main part is you must get everybody (Fans, Administration and Team) to buy into the philosophy of the head coach. Without a philosophy and everybody on board, you can't win the big one. Pete wants his kids to have fun. He has a philosophy that if you aren't having fun then you won't excel at the next level. Now let's think about that one component. If you love what you do and you give it your best, then having fun is a given. They all go hand in hand. Let's reverse it. If I don't like what I do then I probably won't give it my all and fun is no where in the picture. I didn't know much about Pete until the show went on to mention an article written in the LA magazine. I have it available for you to digest. So take a peek and see if you can dig out the rest of Pete Carroll's philosophy and what makes him successful. Note: Pete Carroll Article does contain some salty language: www.storkmontgomery.com/Pete_Carroll_ LA Magazine_122007.pdf -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recruiting -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's getting good now. I recently was an observer to an in-home visit with a prospect. I must say it is the second best thing other than live high school football on Friday nights. I love combines, but the visit is it. Why? I am a salesperson and have been all my life. I like to observe the coach and see just how interested he is in the athlete he is visiting or his own. If you listen real close, you can catch a glimpse of that person's philosophy. A great recruiter will ask a lot of questions about what the athlete likes. If he is real good he can feed off each answer the prospect gives. The more information you have about the athlete, the better your chances become in getting the prospect to come on an official visit. You can almost watch the interest level go either way, but on this observation the coach did well. He did what all great salespeople do in that he found common ground and used it to his advantage. The coach and parents had some past friendships that crossed. This is powerful. Why? Because it draws a level of trust you can't buy. I don't want to give away anymore that I should, so let's stop right there. In 13 days I will tell you who the actors were. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chart your course juniors -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now if you are a junior, it's time to start charting your final year of football. Plan your combines, and academics. Plan everyday from now until the next signing day making sure you have everything in line. Double-check your grades to make sure you are on target to graduate. Make sure you have all the paperwork filled out with the . Take the ACT and SAT every chance it is offered. Plan to attend two camps this summer to improve your chances. Work out with other pieces of equipment than just weights in order to be we rounded for your final season. If you are not working out now on a regular basis, guess what? It's too late to prepare for the spring combines. The first group of combines is in 45 days. There is now way to increase your speed until now until then. You can do it for the second round. But if you had your eye on a March or April combine, sorry just not enough time between now and the test. It takes at least 64 plus days to improve your time according to speed trainers. Even in that short period the workout schedule is heavy. Don't get discouraged, just get to work. We will pick up this topic a little later on in 2008. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's A Wrap -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, that's a wrap. I am still recovering from the wonderful ride the 2007 season took me on. It was a lot of fun, but the best part was sharing it with my wife. She helps run the computer to capture all the plays on Friday night as I man the camera. It's great having another person on board that believes in the philosophy of this website and just plain ole helping kids. God Bless and take care and we will see ya soon.
